Golf For the Beginner

You might be surprised at how many people want to learn to play golf. Actually, that should not come as a big surprise because over the last several decades golf has become more popular than ever. Some of this heightened popularity is because of high-profile players like Tiger Woods; some of it because of the ever expanding exposure of golf on the television, and some of it because golf is just plain fun to learn and play.

Golf can be fun, that is true, but learning the basic techniques of a good golf swing can be challenging. You can certainly learn to play golf alone but that is truly the hard path to take. If you want to learn this fascinating game it is in your best interest to find someone who already plays the game and ask them to teach you the basic set up and swing techniques. A family member or a friend who plays golf would be a great choice, but you can seek the services of a professional teacher. A good place to start with that task is at the local pro shop in your area. Many times a local pro will be happy to instruct you in the basics and the charges for these services are usually reasonable.

Golf clubs

One of the first things that you will learn is that the most important tools a golfer has are his or her golf clubs. In general, you have two choices when it comes to buying your first set of golf clubs. You can buy new golf clubs or you can buy used clubs. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Brand new, top-of-the-line golf clubs can be very expensive. However, do not let that put you off from learning the game. You can find very affordable, brand new golf clubs at most department stores. You can also shop for and purchase affordable golf clubs online. In some cases, online prices will be lower than the store bought prices for new clubs but make sure that you check the company out first and make sure that you understand the shipping charges. High shipping charges can actually bring the total cost of the clubs above what you would pay at your local department store.

You also have the option of buying used golf clubs. Used clubs can often be found at your local pro shop, a thrift shop, pawn shop, or yard sale. If you see a set of used clubs that interest you make sure you look them over carefully. If they look like they have been through a war, they probably have been and you should pass on them. However, you should not be surprised if you find a set of clubs that look as if they have been pampered throughout the years. Many golfers take better care of the clubs than they do their automobiles.

Buying used clubs is a great way to get a set of top brand clubs at discount prices. In many instances, you will not only get the clubs but you will also get a bag to carry them in. The price of a good bag is worth every penny spent, especially if you choose to carry your clubs rather than use a cart.

All of the clubs in your bag will be important to you as you play a round of golf, but one of the most important clubs is the putter. When you buy a set of clubs from a department store the set may or may not include a putter. If the set does not include a putter, pick one from the rack and try it out before you buy it. It is very important that you use a putter that feels good to you. Take a few practice putts with it. If it feels wobbly or off balance, put it back and try another one. Getting the right putter will save you many strokes on the course later, so spend all the time you need on it now.

If you buy a set of used clubs you will probably find a putter in the bag. This is not always the case, but it does happen often. Again, make sure that the putter feels good in your hands. If it does not feel good to you then resign yourself to buying one that does feel right in your hands. You will discover as you begin playing golf that more strokes are lost on the green than just about anywhere else on the course. So get the best putter you can afford and the one that feels perfect in your hands.

Golf balls

Golf balls are also needed by the new player. You can spend a lot of money on golf balls but you do not have to. Until you have a good swing technique it is advisable to buy the less expensive golf balls. The reason is simple: You will most likely lose these balls in the water or in the woods. If you prefer, you can also buy used golf balls, which is also a good option. These balls will work just fine for you as a new golfer and they cost a lot less than new balls. Used golf balls are sometimes called reconditioned balls.

Golf practice

Once you have your clubs and your balls and have been taught some of the basic golf swing mechanics it is time to get on the practice range. The practice range is where you can take your time and hone your basic skills without having to worry about slowing play on the real course. A practice range can be used for learning your woods and your irons. It is always a good idea to run through as many clubs as you can during a practice session. Avoid the temptation to practice with just one or two clubs. Get your hands on all of your clubs and learn how they feel in your hands and how they react to various swings. This is the essence of a good, solid practice session.

When you want to hone your chipping, pitching, and putting skills visit the practice green. Most golf courses have an area that is designed for putting and chipping. If you really want to shave strokes off of your score this is the place to be. Putting (or poor putting) adds more strokes than you might imagine to a score card. And unlike driving which can takes months to master, putting skills can be learned fairly quickly with some practice. You should make it a habit to practice your putting whenever you can.

Get help if needed

If possible, try to find yourself a golfing buddy to play with on the course. He or she can help you with your swing, keep an eye out for your ball, and answer questions should you have any. For many new golfers the first times out on the course can seem like a visit to a foreign country. Having an experienced player with you will help ease the confusion.

Lastly, it is very important that a new golfer understand that golf cannot be learned in a single day or even in single lifetime. There is always something new to learn in this sport, and there is always room for improvement in your game. This holds true for all golfers, regardless of how long they have been playing. Golf is a sport that demands practice, but it is also a sport where practice pays off. Good luck and happy golfing.
