Golfers around the world all have one thing in common. They all seem to feel they have more trouble than they should sinking short putts. This is a result of several simple things that we aren’t doing when step up to our golf ball on the green. Let’s have a look at those things now:
• Preparation: A short putt becomes harder for the simple reason that we don’t prepare for the shot in the same way we would if it were longer. We assume it is straight and that there are no hang ups with the golf shot.
Note: Most golfers have some sort of putting routine. If you have such a routine, do not forget about it simply because the shot is shorter. Do the same things for a short putt as you might for a longer one and you will be surprised at the difference
• Contact: Because putts that are closer than 5 feet look straight, people seem to forget the importance of proper ball contact. When your putter strikes the golf ball it should be square to it. Even though your swing won’t be as strong, if it isn’t straight your ball will slide off the mark.
• Weight: Typical golfers have trouble making shorter putts because they cannot find the weight. Rather than spending time on the practice green working on 25 footers, work on shorter putts. You’ll definitely notice a difference when you head out on the golf course.
Hint: A great drill for practicing your putting weight is to mark a spot a foot away and attempt to roll putts to the mark consistently. The shorter you are able to control your weight; the more confident you will be when attempting similar putts.
• Feel: For some reason when a golfer steps up to a short putt, they seem to lose the natural swing they are used to. Don’t attempt to push the ball into the hole. Swing a slow, normal golf swing and glide the golf ball to the hole.
Note: The choice of your putter can make a big difference to you feel. If you are having trouble with this, you might want to try a different putter.
• Confidence: There is nothing more important to a golfer than confidence. Doubt is a killer to focus and a natural swing. If you’ve practice the short putt and prepared properly for the shot, you are going to hit it.
